What counts as a download

WordPress.org counts every download of the plugin’s zip: new installs, and the updates sites install, by hand or automatically. That’s why a release day can run many times a normal day, and why downloads run well above the number of sites using it. A typical day here is the middle of the last two weeks, so a release doesn’t pass as the usual rate.
