Find searches your rivals win

Two tabs on the SEO page help you find new searches to go after. Keyword gap lists searches where your rivals rank in the top 20 and you don’t. Opportunities scores a wider set of ideas for your plugin, including the keywords you already track. Both are built on real WordPress.org search results, and both are for plugins.

Use the keyword gap

  1. Add at least one rival to the plugin on your dashboard. See Watch your rivals.
  2. Open SEO in the sidebar, choose the plugin, and open the Keyword gap tab. The Keyword gap with rivals link under the dashboard’s Keywords tab goes to the same place.
  3. Each row shows the search, the rivals that rank for it with their positions, your own position under You, then Your chance, Difficulty and Audience.
  4. Click + at the end of a row to start tracking that search.

The gap reads the last three days of results for every search tracked in TrackWP, puts the searches with the most rivals first, and shows up to 40. Searches you already track, or already rank in the top 20 for, are left out.

Use opportunities

  1. Open the Opportunities tab, or click Find keyword opportunities under the dashboard’s Keywords tab.
  2. TrackWP gathers ideas: your tracked keywords, searches you or your rivals rank for, your tags and your rivals’ tags, and phrases from your name and short description. Each row says where its idea came from.
  3. Ideas without a WordPress.org result from the last seven days are searched while you wait, and appear as they come in.
  4. Click + to track an idea. Rows you already track say Tracked.

Read the scores

  • Your chance: Within reach means your numbers already match the tenth result, so use the phrase in your short description and tags. Name it means you’d get there with the phrase in your plugin name. Stretch takes up to ten times your installs, and Out of reach takes more. In the top 10 means you already rank there.
  • Difficulty, from 0 to 100, reflects the installs a plugin named for the search would need to reach the top 10.
  • Installs for you is what you would need as you are, and with the phrase in your name. Missing words means your listing lacks a word of the search.
  • Audience is Small, Medium or Large, from what the top 10 download a day, because WordPress.org doesn’t publish search counts.

Limits by plan

  • Starter: not included, though every plan shows difficulty for the keywords you track.
  • Boost: the keyword gap, and up to 25 new ideas per product in Opportunities.
  • FullCharge: the keyword gap, and up to 60 new ideas per product.

The + button only appears while the product has room for more keywords on your plan. To check any other search, use the free Keyword Difficulty tool.
